Future Atlantis
The old town of Dragør is one of Denmark's oldest yet best-preserved village environments. It features a historic town center with narrow streets, yellow skipper houses, and now only a few iconic lookout towers.
The old town includes 350 buildings, primarily constructed between the late 18th century and the mid-19th century, as well as several memorial stones and other buildings of significant historical value. Of the 350 buildings, 77 are protected, making it the largest concentration of protected buildings in a small town in Denmark.
Due to their location, all these buildings share the common threat of being affected by future sea level rises in Køge Bay. These rising sea levels could, in the worst-case scenario, leave large parts of Dragør municipality submerged and its buildings in decay. Over time, this could lead to the complete erasure of what I consider to be one of Denmark's most beautiful towns.
